If you have ever wondered how Indian singers would sound if they covered Ed Sheeran’s super hit song ‘Perfect’, then mimicry artist Sumedh Shinde has the answer for you. Earlier this week, Shinde shared a video in which he sang ‘Perfect’ but in the voices of India’s most popular singers. In an impressive display of talent, he switched to eight singers’ voices without breaking the flow of the song. Shinde started the romantic song with Udit Narayan and then moved to Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Sonu Nigam, Annu Malik, AR Rahman, Mika Singh, Adnan Sami, and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam.
In less than two minutes, Shinde perfectly encapsulated the essence of each singer, be it the cheerful voice of Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan, the deep baritone of AR Rahman, or the soulful voice of Adnan Sami. He also made sure to retain the subtle accents of Mika Singh who is from Punjab and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam who is from Andhra Pradesh. This video has over 23,000 likes on Instagram. In the comments, people showered praises on Shinde’s talent.
Comedian and rapper Munawar Faruqui commented on this video and wrote, “When mika paaji arrived! bhai aap kamaal ho (Brother you are amazing).” Another commented, “Seriously Sumedh, please try for Hollywood, you’re at the wrong place, trust me, please fancy Hollywood for once, you’re immensely talented !! God bless you bhaaii, you’re a STAR !!!” An Instagram user wrote, “Brother.. imitating someone is talent but Singing and with those vocal notes and transition. Take a bow, you just went 100 notches ahead as an artist.”
In an interview with Indian Express, Shinde revealed that before pursuing mimicry and becoming a voice-over artist, he was a dentist. However, he quit the profession after his clinic was closed down during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.
The 38-year-old said that he has been doing voice imitations since his childhood. When he was young, he would mimic Amir Khan’s character from the 1995 film Rangeela. Incidentally, after he grew up, he dubbed Amir Khan’s voice in 3 Idiots for a small scene, during the post-production when Khan was unavailable. As a voice-over artist, he has dubbed for Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan for commercials in languages such as Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi. Talking about how he masters his craft, Shinde said, “I pay attention to things like how many words per minute an actor or singer says. I observe them in interviews and that helps me in understanding their thinking as well.”
