Thursday saw a jubilant gathering of a sea of fans as they gave a rousing welcome to Team India, celebrating their T20 World Cup victory. This, however, also led to a series of challenges, bringing traffic in South Mumbai to a standstill. The fervent display of national pride and happiness soon turned into scenes of distress as the massive crowd created a stampede-like situation. Amid instances of mismanagement, overcrowding and complaints of trouble breathing, a woman collapsed at the scene.
A video going viral from the overcrowded Marine Drive shows a Mumbai Police official carrying an unconscious woman through the crowd while people struggle to make way for him.

The video garnered a lot of attention, drawing praise from people over the city police’s unwavering service during the event. On the other hand, some even called out the department for poor crowd management that led to such mishaps.
A user wrote, “Salute to the police officer,” while another commented, “People should be careful.. we can’t just put all the pressure on the police.”
“Well done Mumbai police!! You never fail to make us feel proud of you and our country!!!” an individual noted. A person questioned the need for such overcrowding and said, “N then they’ll question the Administration after Mishaps. Do our people even realise the consequences of overcrowding?”
“This entire video gives me anxiety – wish this was better managed,” a concerned user wrote.
Notably, the video is just a single instance of the many blunders that took place last evening. According to multiple reports, those who took part in the event struggled to breathe, suffered minor injuries and had medical emergencies owing to the humid conditions and sudden rain. Some were even rushed to hospitals for quick first aid. Besides, reports of missing children also surfaced, as many were found by the deployed cops and taken to the police station.
Social media is flooded with the experiences of eyewitnesses who saw the police officials helping the crowd and evacuating some to ensure they get to breathe properly.

During this time, all the roads leading to Marine Drive and the iconic Wankhede Stadium were closed. Establishments around the venue were asked to give early leave to employees. Despite the restrictions, thousands landed at the celebrations, leaving Team India’s convoy with much excitement.
