With the recent heavy rains, a portion of Saudi Arabia’s vast desert terrain between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina has experienced a stunning makeover. A plentiful supply of water has given the once dry and desolate countryside a new lease on life, causing it to blossom into vivid shades of green.
This drastic transformation, which is most visible in the western parts, is due to an infusion of extra water from rainfall, which has fed the parched soil and encouraged the growth of luxuriant flora.
“After heavy rains, parts of Saudi Arabia’s desert near Mecca and Medina have turned green. This transformation, particularly in the West, is due to excess water, leading to the growth of grass and plants. Photos show camels grazing on fresh grass, and once arid areas are now vibrant with colour. This unusual sight has also been visible from NASA satellites,” reads the post on Instagram.

The post on social media also described how attention from outside of Earth has been drawn to the desert’s remarkable greening. The caption mentioned that NASA satellites had also been able to see the strange sight. Photos taken after the rains reveal camels munching on new grass, a sight that is uncommon in these parched regions. There is now a lot of life in places that were previously barren of vegetation. The landscape of the desert is peppered with green spots that stand out sharply against the golden dunes.
The post on Instagram attracted a lot of attention and comments.
One user said, “How exciting! Love all the extra rain.” Another user quoted a verse from the bible and wrote, “Wow, the Bible has prophesied this event. Indeed God knows the beginning and the end. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. Isaiah 35:6-7 NIV.”
A third user commented, “They got their rain machine to do good. Well done. Plant more trees and you will have won the Race!!!” While a fourth user exclaimed, “The world is shifting and we are seeing beautiful things our eyes aren’t used to!”.
