Food presentations have reached unprecedented heights in the culinary world. But this Indian grandmother gave it a desi twist and it is hilarious. A recent video featuring the ‘savage nani’, the grandma of comedian Viraj Gehlani, has gone viral as a result of her cheeky attitude to posh restaurants. The star of the show? Mini heart-shaped chapatis.

The video begins with Viraj seated in a chair in front of a table set for a simple Indian meal – dal, chapati, rice and beans. He looks at his plate with an expression of disgust and asks his grandmother to serve something restaurant-style as his food is “plain and boring”.

Instead of getting offended, Nani quips back in the most entertaining and skilful manner one could ever imagine. Coming back with a platter which can give any Michelin-star restaurant a run for its money, Viraj is presented with a heart-shaped mini chapati, one scoop of rice and buttermilk served in a wine glass. This is a clear parody of the fact that most of the restaurants serving haute cuisine offer meals in teeny-weeny portions.

At this point, it is evident that Viraj feels the elegance comes at a great price since his heaping plate is now in small portions. He blurts out apologies the next moment as the heart-shaped chapati rests on his plate as though to remind him not to underestimate nani’s sense of humour or her food.

Everyone on the internet seemed to love this charming parody. The audience quickly began referring to her as “Savage Nani” for her unapologetic personality and superior humour. Most of the viewers appreciated the video and recognised the authenticity of the Indian homemade food compared to some of the tacky presentations that are offered in fancy restaurants. Some could not even believe how strongly the elderly woman proved her point without speaking even a single word.
