One of the leading luxury hotel chains in the world, the Oberoi Group is known for its top-class hospitality, providing a comfortable and memorable service to all its guests. However, there was a time when the five-star hotel actually denied a late check-out to a billionaire. Kapil Chopra, the former Oberoi Group president, recently shared how billionaire Michael Dell was once refused a late check-out from the Oberoi Hotel in Gurgaon.
Speaking on The BarberShop podcast with Bombay Shaving Company founder Shantanu Deshpande, Chopra shared the incident while discussing the topic of customer complaints.
Mentioning that a lot of customers had shared problems with the strict check-in and check-out timings, Kapil Chopra gave the example of Michael Dell.
“Michael Dell walked up quietly in his own unassuming way to the front desk. The bad luck at the hotel was a receptionist on her first day, and she had no idea about him. The members were all on the phone, so he was all alone in the lobby, and he suddenly realised that he had to leave in the evening,” Kapil Chopra shared.
Continuing it further, the former president added, “He walks up to the desk and says, ‘Can I get a late checkout?’ The lady quoted the policy and said, ‘Sir, checkout is till 12 PM. If you stay until 6 PM, it’s a half-day charge. If it’s post-6 PM, then it’s a full-day charge.'”
Chopra recalled receiving a call from the country head of Dell. “The country head calls me and says, ‘You could have charged us more. Why was Michael Dell refused? Now he wants to check out because he wants to set an example,” he added.
