People, generally, carry makeup or mouth fresheners in their purses. A few people find inhalers or medicines important things to keep in their handbags. But this Swedish woman carries gluten-free bread with her all the time and everywhere. Her tactic has often left the bouncers at the clubs baffled. All of this so she can enjoy a McDonald’s burger!
Evelyn Burton, 22, was born in Sweden and moved to the United Kingdom when she was 11. The student at the University of Lincoln shared that the bouncers are baffled to see why she has random bits of bread in cling film. She claims that she got into the habit of taking her bread, which is known as “handbag bread”, everywhere. “I take it into nightclubs or bars, it comes with me for the whole night out and ends up in McDonald’s at about 4 am.” She did this so she could enjoy the burger from Golden Arches without suffering a reaction.
She has often faced a bit of hindrance while trying to take her pieces of bread in bars or nightclubs where outside food is not allowed. But after offering them an explanation that she suffers from coeliac disease, she gets to take her Marks and Spencer (M&S) brand gluten-free bread in her purse. The 22-year-old student also works at M&S and goes to her local McDonald’s, where she buys a double cheeseburger sans the buns and uses her bread.
Evelyn Burton was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease when she was only seven years old. This means she cannot have dishes like pasta, bread and other foods with gluten in it or she would suffer from intestinal damage. However, her craving for the burger from the fast food joint did not stop her from enjoying it, which during her growing up years, her health-obsessed mother prevented her from having.
She said that when she goes to the fast food joint after a night out with her friends, she feels nice to be able to eat something there. Hence, she orders a double cheeseburger with all the extra pickles and opts for bunless. Evelyn claimed that sometimes the staff at the food place have offered to put the fillings in her gluten-free bread, but since she suffers from a severe allergy, she does not want to risk cross-contamination.
