In a sign of the rising anti-Hindu sentiment in Bangladesh, a video of women crying over the restriction on access to highway and markets has surfaced.
CNN-News18 has exclusively accessed the video from Gopalganj district. According to local sources, women are also being threatened to leave the country.
Bangladesh’s Jamat-e-Islami is acting against Hindus. During the flood relief work, too, Hindus were asked to leave, said sources.
Earlier, the group had forced teachers to resign and a principal was humiliated with a garland of shoes on the streets of Bangladesh. In Kazipur area, the group vandalised Sufi shrines.
Top intelligence sources said: “The Bangladesh situation is troubling us. We are in touch with the Yunus government, but they will take time to understand the gravity of the situation. They are guided by anti-India sentiments because of Indian government’s proximity with former PM Sheikh Hasina. They want Hasina to be handed over which is a subject of review and political decisions.”
Hasina landed at the Hindon airbase near Delhi on August 5, as part of her plan to go to London, hours after she resigned as the Bangladesh prime minister following weeks of anti-government protests that killed nearly 300 people. With her asylum not working out in the UK or US, she has extended her stay in India on visa.
Hasina will be back in the country as soon as democracy is restored, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy had said last. Meanwhile, Prof Mohammad Yunus took oath as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government.
REVIEW OF MOUS
News18 had earlier reported how Dhaka’s Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud is keen to review and scrap some Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with India which are not beneficial or have given any results.
In response, sources in the Indian government said: “New Delhi and Dhaka are close to each other. We have strategic interests because of border sharing. So far, nothing has come to us officially on the review of MOUs, but we will see when it comes. This is the initial stage of the new government. They will have a different vision as they evolve.”
In June 2024, the Sheikh Hasina government signed 10 MoUs out of which seven were new and three were renewed. The MoUs were signed after the delegation-level talks between the two countries at the Hyderabad House during Hasina’s two-day state visit to India.
The minister met the media in Dhaka after returning from OIC Meet. Earlier, he had said that Bangladesh wants Hasina to be handed over to India for the cases filed against her as her Red Passport is already cancelled. “Handing over Hasina on the basis of cases filed against her is a view which we will take only based on what we receive,” said Indian government sources.
The Bangladesh government also wants Indian contractors to come soon to the country and start working on the pending projects.
