More than 300 people have been killed in the stampede during haj near Mecca, Saudi Arabia on Thursday, just a day before Bakr Id/Eid ul-Adha. More than 220 ambulances and 4,000 rescue workers had been sent to the stampede's location to help the wounded.
According to Geo TV Bureau Chief, Mecca, Shahid Naeem Saudi Arabian authorities had made arrangements to transport people from Mina to Mecca in buses. But the pilgrims refused to use them and walked from Mina to Mecca in the believe that their pilgrimage will be successful if they walked.
One group was moving ahead when the next group also started walking which led to the tragedy.
The stampede occurred at Mina, Jadid Street at around 10 am. Most of those dead and injured are from Africa and Iranians. The stampede, in which at least 450 others were injured, took place at Mina, a few kilometres east of Mecca, where pilgrims stay for several days during the climax of the haj.
Mina is where pilgrims carry out a symbolic stoning of the devil by throwing pebbles against three stone walls.
