Former US president Barack Obama disclosed that his daughters have been discouraged from pursuing careers in politics by their mother and former US First Lady, Michelle Obama.
Barack and Michelle Obama have two daughters Malia, 25, and Sasha, 22. Speaking at the star-studded fundraising event in Los Angeles along with US President Joe Biden, Obama answered questions from the press which sought to know if they would ever see Malia and Sasha following in their father’s footsteps.
“That is a question I do not need to answer because Michelle drilled into them so early that you would be crazy to go into politics. It will never happen,” 62-year-old Obama responded.
Joe Biden, who was by his side, added that they are both “powerful young women”.
Following their mother’s advice, both of the former president’s daughters have chosen paths outside of politics.
Malia made headlines with her red carpet debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where she showcased her short film “The Heart.” It should be noted that she opted to use “Malia Ann” rather than “Obama” in the credits.
She is the writer and the director of the 18-minute short film that premiered at the festival in January in Utah.
Sasha, who has also steered clear of politics, graduated from the University of Southern California in May with a degree in sociology.
The former first lady herself has also swatted aside rumours that claimed that she may run for the Oval Office in the past few months.
“Former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president. Mrs Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ re-election campaign,” her communications officer said earlier this year.
Hollywood stars joined Obama for the gala evening that Biden’s campaign says has already raised $28 million.
The event was attended by actors Julia Roberts and George Clooney, as well as singing icon Barbra Streisand.
“It’s the largest Democratic fundraiser ever,” Clooney said.
Obama answered the questions when he took the stage with Biden, his former vice president, for a conversation moderated by late-night US comic Jimmy Kimmel.
