Japan’s rapidly aging population has created a shortage of young workers. To deal with this shortage, Japan has come up with major changes in its visa rules. Many, on social media, have described this new visa policy as “breeding visa,” with the notion that it encourages foreigners to come to Japan and have children.
Following this new visa policy, many have taken to social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook saying that youth from around the world should move to Japan to help increase its population.
However, this claim is incorrect. While Japan has indeed changed its foreign worker visa rules, the primary goal is to address the shortage of workers and not to increase its population.
Earlier in April, Japanese news agency Kyodo News reported that Japan has expanded its foreign worker visa program which allows extended stays of up to five years. This aims at addressing the country’s worker shortage.
Since the news about this foreign worker visa program came out on April 1, which is commonly known as April Fools’ Day, Japanese news website Sora News 24 dubbed it the “breeding visa.” This joke has since spread widely and has continued to circulate on social media globally till September.
The demand for foreign workers in Japan has increased significantly in recent years. While there are many reasons behind this, one of them is due to a significant decline in the birth rate. To address this, the Japanese government plans to give entry to 8,20,000 foreigners under the skilled worker visa program over the next five financial years, starting from April this year.
