A hearing in the US Congress on Thursday night became chaotic as representatives from both sides, Republicans and Democrats, broke into an explosive verbal confrontation.
Republican representative from Georgia Marjorie Taylor Greene, New York Democrat representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Texas Dem Representative Jasmine Crockett got into a heated argument after the Republican from Georgia said the Texas Dem was ‘wearing fake eyelashes’.
A report by The Hill said that the House Oversight and Accountability Committee was holding a markup hearing to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for not handing over the audio of President Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur, but did not proceed much further because lawmakers were shouting over one another for over an hour.
The members first voted on whether to allow Greene to continue speaking during the hearing. The Republican questioned if Democrats on the panel were employing the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan. Juan Merchan is overseeing former US president Donald Trump’s hush money trial.
The argument began when Crockett questioned why Greene would bring up Merchan and asked her if she knew “what we’re here for?”
“I don’t think you know what you’re here for. I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading,” Greene responded.
At that point, top Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, Maryland’s Raskin interjected, saying, “that’s beneath even you, Ms. Greene”.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that it was “disgusting” and “absolutely unacceptable” to attack the physical appearance of another person and asked Greene to apologise and strike her words out.
Even though Greene agreed to strike her words out, she did not apologise. “Then you are not striking your words out,” Ocasio-Cortez could be heard saying.
The two lawmakers continued the argument even after a short break as Greene insulted Ocasio-Cortez’s intelligence and said she would “never” apologise for her comments.
Crockett later hit back at Greene and appeared as if to say that she has a “bleach blond, bad built, butch body”. On Friday, Crockett said that she believes Greene’s original comment was “absolutely” racist.
Several Democrats and Republicans agreed that it was not a good look for the Congress.
