Mahindra Thar Hits a Milestone With 76000 Bookings, Faces 70-Week Waiting Period
Mahindra Thar's off-road charm leads to 76,000 bookings, facing wait times up to 70 weeks. A new 5-door version in the making signals inclusivity.

Mahindra‘s iconic Thar, launched just over three years ago, has become the talk of the town with a staggering 76,000 open bookings as of November 2023.

This robust off-roader, known for its rugged design and versatile drivetrains, has firmly established itself as the SUV to beat in the highly competitive Indian market.

The three-door variant of the Mahindra Thar is the undisputed star, consistently notching over 10,000 monthly bookings, affirming its status as the go-to lifestyle off-roader.

However, this surge in popularity brings challenges, with a waiting period extending up to a whopping 70 weeks. The RWD hard-top diesel variants face the most extended wait, reaching 70 weeks, while petrol enthusiasts endure a slightly shorter period of up to 22 weeks. Those eyeing the 4WD variant must brace for a waiting period of around 24 weeks.

Offering both RWD and 4WD configurations, the Mahindra Thar caters to diverse preferences. Its powertrain options include a 2.0-litre gasoline engine delivering 150bhp and 300Nm of torque for petrol enthusiasts. On the diesel front, there are options of a 1.5-litre and a 2.0-litre engine, each providing varying levels of power and torque.

Despite these challenges, Mahindra is gearing up to meet the soaring demand head-on. With a proactive approach, the automaker is churning out approximately 5,000 Thar units each month, aiming to address market demands and alleviate waiting periods.

Furthermore, Mahindra is preparing to extend the Thar family with a 5-door version, making it more inclusive for families and friends. Spotted numerous times during testing, this upcoming variant is not just a machine but a promise of shared journeys and cherished moments.

Anticipated to arrive in India next year, it’s set to carry forward the legacy of the Thar, with the petrol and diesel engines evolving to meet new challenges. The pricing, similar to the Mahindra Scorpio-N, adds an exciting chapter to this unfolding story, leaving us with the curiosity of what the longer, larger model will be named—will it stick with the Thar legacy, or will the Armada nameplate make a heartwarming comeback?

As the Mahindra Thar continues carving its distinct place in the SUV realm, it not only embodies rugged design and off-road prowess but also stands as Mahindra’s testament to syncing with the ever-evolving desires of Indian auto enthusiasts.
