The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro) is all set to kickstart the construction of the new Chhatrapati Shivajinagar MSRTC bus station.
A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been prepared and is awaiting approval from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).
Hemant Sonawane, Maha-Metro’s Executive Director, confirmed that the plan will soon be shared with MSRTC. Once the green light is given, construction will commence. “We will discuss the draft plan with MSRTC, and after their approval, we will finalize the details, such as whether to proceed with a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Following this, the tendering process will begin, and a construction agency will be appointed,” Sonawane statedm as quoted to The Indian Express.
Back in 2019, MSRTC offered land to Maha-Metro for the construction of the Shivajinagar underground Metro station. As part of the deal, Maha-Metro is responsible for building a new bus depot at Shivajinagar, equipped with modern facilities.
Currently, the bus depot is operating from Wakdewadi, where passengers have voiced concerns over poor conditions, particularly during the monsoon season. There has been a strong demand from passengers to relocate the bus depot back to its original site at Shivajinagar.
Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to announce that work on the new integrated Shivajinagar bus station complex will begin soon.
He mentioned having a meeting with Maha-Metro CMD Shravan Hardikar and Hemant Sonawane, where the draft plan was discussed. A final decision on the project, which is estimated to cost between Rs 250 crore and Rs 300 crore, is expected within the next 15 days.
