When it comes to traffic problems, we instantly think of Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru. So, if you are thinking that these three cities are at the top when it comes to the slowest traffic in India, you are absolutely wrong. In fact, in a recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a non-profit research organisation based in the USA, it was found that three Indian cities are among the top 10 cities in the world with the slowest traffic.
As per the report, it was found that Kolkata in West Bengal, Bhiwandi in Maharashtra and Arrah in Bihar are included on the list of top 10 cities in the world with the slowest traffic. The NBER study included more than 1,200 cities from 152 countries. The report titled “The Fast, the Slow and the Congested: Urban Transportation in Rich And Poor Countries” found that the average travel speed of motor vehicles in a day is the highest in Flint, Michigan in the USA, while the slowest is in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and the most congested traffic is in Bogota (Colombia).
The researchers relied on data from Google Maps between June 13 and November 5, 2019, to analyse traffic in more than 1,000 cities which have a population of over 3,00,000.
As per data, Bhiwandi is ranked number 5 in the world’s 20 slowest cities on the speed index. On number 6 is Kolkata, followed by Arrah at number 7. On number 11 is Bihar Sharif, Mumbai is 13th on the list and Aizawl is 18th. Surprisingly, Bengaluru falls on 19th rank, followed by Shillong in 20th position on the list.
The NBER researchers collected 58,29,56,059 instances of 1,89,67,344 trips from 1,228 cities for their sample. The report mentioned, “For our three most populous countries, India, the US, and Indonesia, we collected 66 million, 57 million and 13 million trip instances in 173, 121 and 29 cities respectively.”
