Banks In This State Are Closed Today; Check List Of Other Regional Holidays In September

All banks in Assam will remain shut on Wednesday, September 4. Banks in other states, however, will continue to serve the customers as per the usual schedule. The day marks the death anniversary of Assamese Polymath Srimanta Shankardev, who played a key role in the Bhakti movement and the spread of Vaishnavism in the region in the 15th-16th century.

Apart from being a social reformer, Shankardev was a renowned poet, playwright and saint. He founded several monasteries (known as Sattras) in Assam. These institutions are run by his disciples and a major portion of people in the state practice the religion Shankardev taught. In his honour, the government of Assam observes a holiday on his death anniversary every year.

The Government of India has announced only three national holidays this year – Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), however, has the authority to declare regional holidays in any state under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) Holidays and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

Banks across the country remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, allowing the employees to take a break from their hectic schedule.

The RBI has released a list of regional holidays set for September 2024. On these days, no physical banking service will be available in certain states. Customers, however, will be able to use digital banking services (Internet banking, SMS banking and WhatsApp banking) to complete financial and non-financial transactions.

September 7, Saturday – Banks in several states including Maharashtra, Tami Nadu and Karnataka will remain closed for Ganesh Chaturthi.

September 14, Saturday – People in Kerala and Jharkhand observe First Onam or Karma Puja on this day and the banks will not operate in these states.

September 16, Monday – Banks in Gujarat, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Hyderabad, Manipur, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir will remain shut on this day due to Milad-un-Nabi or Id-e-Milad (Birthday of Prophet Mohammad).

September 17, Tuesday – There is a bank holiday in Sikkim and Chattisgarh on this day for Indra Jatra.

September 18, Wednesday – Banks in Sikkim will have another holiday due to Pang-Lhabsol.

September 20, Friday – People in Jammu and Srinagar will celebrate Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi and due to this festival, banks will remain shut.

September 21, Saturday– The day marks Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day in Kerala and thus, the banks will remain closed in this state.

September 23, Monday – This day has been designated as a bank holiday in Jammu and Kashmir for the celebration of Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary.

People of the above-mentioned states, who have a plan to visit the bank in September, must note down the days to avoid any hustle.
