Kolkata: IBM India will hire 3,000 more employees to expand its Kolkata centre operations over the next 18 months.

"We have already hired 700 and the number will reach 3,000 over the next one and a half years in the new facility at Rajarhat," IBM VP (Global Delivery) Amitabh Ray said on Thursday.

IBM has 4,000 employees in the three existing facilities in the city. Post expansion of the fourth facility the total strength of IBM for Kolkata operations would rise to 7,000.

Kolkata has the second largest pool of employees after Bangalore. The present workforce strength of IBM now stands at 43,000 as of June.

IBM India Managing Director Shanker Annaswamy said the attrition rate in Kolkata was minimal which encouraged the company to rapidly expand in the east.

IBM has tie-up with IIT Delhi and Bangalore for Global Innovation Mission. In West Bengal, IBM has relations with IIT-Kharagpur for Deep Computing Visualisation Lab.

It also has a 'Centre for Mobile Computing', a centre of excellence for wireless and sensor technology with Jadavpur University.

Speaking at the inauguration of IBM's fourth facility, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee requested IBM to start a training centre or finishing school to create IT students as per industry requirement.
