New Delhi: Jet Airways pilots have rejected the airline’s proposal to take a 5-10 per cent salary cut and will meet on November 27 to consider their options.
Sources in the company have told CNN-IBN the airline’s management has proposed a cut in the salaries of pilots and engineers. The top management would itself take a 25 per cent cut in salary.
Employees earning up to Rs 5 lakh a month will face a deduction of 5 per cent. Employees earning more than Rs 5 lakh will face a deduction of 10 per cent. The pay cut would not affect employees earning less than Rs 75,000 per month.
A source in Jet Airways told CNN the pilots are not against the airline’s proposal but want it cut cost in other areas first. They want the company to cut the salaries of foreign pilots, who are paid more than their Indian counterparts.
Jet has about 288 foreign pilots and about 800 Indian pilots. “The pilots aren't adverse to a pay cut and would have readily agreed if the system was fair to them,” said a source in the airline.
“They (pilots) simply cannot watch expatriate pilots who earn more than them enjoy the benefit while they are made to sacrifice. So the fight is not just about money. The fight is on principle,” the source said.
