Mumbai: The markets closed in green near the day’s high, mirroring the positive close in most of the global equity markets. The markets had a weak opening, but gained strength in second half of the day.
The Sensex closed up 214.59 points or 1.73 per cent at 12644.99, and the Nifty up 70.35 points or 1.95 per cent at 3678.9. About 1388 shares have advanced, 1097 shares declined, and 77 shares are unchanged.
Asian markets ended higher gaining in the range of 1-1.5 per cent. Buying was seen in scrips across sectors. Banking, capital goods, IT, oil & gas and telecom stocks were among the top gainers. Apart from the above-mentioned sectors, one set of stocks that did well was the tea pack.
But the volumes were relatively low and the breadth was in favour of the advances. The frontliners outperformed the midcap and smallcap index, which were up around 1 per cent. Top gainers on the Sensex were Reliance Comm, BHEL and ONGC.
ITC, Hero Honda and Hindalco were among the gainers. Other than FMCG, all the other BSE sector indices ended in green.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,286.67 up 51.1 points or 0.98 per cent. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 6,335.07 up 60.43 points or 0.96 per cent. The BSE Bankex was up 1.81 per cent at 6,218.19. UTI Bank, Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 2.09 per cent at 8,508.75. BHEL, Bharat Elec, HEG, ABB, Aban Offshore, Ingersoll Rand closed higher. The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.8 per cent at 3,486.12. Nicholas Piramal, Orchid Chemical, Pfizer, Cadila Health, Lupin closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,846.34 up 1.1 per cent. Tata Motors, Amtek Auto, TVS Motor, MRF, Cummins surged. The BSE Metal Index closed up 0.3 per cent at 8,094.36. JSW Steel, Jindal Steel, Mah Seamless, Jindal Saw, Sesa Goa advanced higher.
The BSE IT Index gained 1.8 per cent at 4,967.35. I-Flex Solution, Mphasis, Wipro, TCS, Infosys advanced. BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.08 per cent to close at 6,213.36. GAIL, ONGC, BPCL, IOC, HPCL ended in green. The BSE FMCG Index ended at 1,620.85, down 0.3 per cent.
