Markets gain: Sensex closes up 70 pts

Mumbai: The market closed higher amid volatile trade. The Sensex ended up over 70 points in late trade. Metals gained nearly 5 per cent with Tata Steel ended up over 7 per cent. Oil, capital goods, technology and auto moved up.

The market closed higher amid volatile trade. The Sensex ended at 11,662.55, up 73.11 points or 0.63 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 11,691.92 and an intraday low of 11,535.28.

The Nifty ended with smart gains at 3430.40, up 23.75 points or 0.68 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 3489.05 and an intraday low of 3430.40.

The CNX Midcap closed at 4975.20, up 25.75 points or 0.52 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 4988.50 and an intraday low of 4936.90.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,970.65, up 96.85 points. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,580.43, up 45.66 points.

The market breadth was positive, about 1501 shares advanced, 994 shares declined, and 45 shares remained unchanged.

The total market turnover was at Rs 50762.46 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8906 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 37182.46 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 4674 crore.

Tata Steel, Grasim, Guj Ambuja Cements, ACC, Hindalco, MTNL and Sail were the biggest gainers on the indices.

SBI, HDFC, Maruti Udyog, NTPC, Wipro, Sun Pharma, HCL Tech, Bharti Tele and Oriental Bank were the biggest losers on the indices.

Metal stocks surged on huge buying interest. The BSE Metal Index closed up 4.88 per cent or 447.84 points at 9,624.70 amid gains in Jindal Stainless, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Sterlite Ind, Jindal Steel, Sail, Hindalco, Hind Zinc and Guj NRE Coke.

The BSE Capital Goods Index ended at 8,742.48, up 0.68 per cent as buying is seen in Aban LoydChiles, Greaves Cotton, ABB, Praj Industries and Siemens.

Oil stocks like Chennai Petro, ONGC, Gail, Kochi Refineries, MRPL and Reliance stirred up. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed at 5040.70, up 0.44 per cent.

Technology stocks including HCL Info, Satyam, I-Flex Solutions, Moser Baer also moved up. The BSE IT Index ended up 0.60 per cent at 4,111.59.

Auto stocks also ended with modest gains.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed at 3,260.05, up 1.65 per cent due to losses in Titan Industries, Samtel Color and Blue Star.

Banking stocks like Oriental Bank, Andhra Bank, SBI, Union Bank and Bank of Baroda also slumped. The BSE Bankex ended at 5,337.75, down 0.45 per cent.

FMCG and pharma stocks also lost ground on selling pressure.
