The Tata Sons chairman however admitted that the company wasted an early opportunity on the car.

New Delhi: Claiming that Nano wasn't a flop, Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata on Thursday admitted that the company wasted an early opportunity on the car.

In a meeting with editors on the sidelines of the Auto Expo, which started in Delhi on Thursday, Tata said the Nano wasn't a flop. He said all the issues with the car will be sorted out in the coming upgrades and Nano variants. He added that Tata Motors will do everything to undo the tag of 'poor man's car'.

In an interaction with the media, he said: "Many efforts were made to discredit the product. We never pushed it (Nano) as a poor man's car, but as an affordable family car. Whatever stigma is there in the market, we will undo it."

The company doesn't plan on a diesel version in India for at least a year. But Tata Motors is working on a variant of the car for the European market.

Talking about the 2G scam, he said the Tatas were victims of the scam, not offenders.

He said it was difficult to quantify how much the company had lost on account of the scam.

Talking about the economy, Tata said external economic conditions were challenging but there was no need for pessimism.
