Ola Maps: Ola Electric Gets Legal Notice from MapMyIndia for Copying Data
CE Info Systems, the parent company of MapMyIndia, has served a legal notice to Ola Electric accusing Bhavish Aggarwal-owned company of duplicating data to build OLA Maps.

CE Info Systems, the parent company of MapMyIndia, has served a legal notice to Ola Electric accusing Bhavish Aggarwal-owned company of duplicating data to build OLA Maps, according to a Forbes India report.

“You have duplicated our client’s API (application programming interface) and SDKs (software development kits) from proprietary sources belonging to our client to build OLA Maps. It is firmly stated that our client’s exclusive data has been copied/derived by you to further your illegal motive and for your unjust commercial gains,” said CE Info Systems in legal notice to Ola Electric, according to Forbes India.

“Your assertion that you have developed API and map data/Ola Maps solely through open map is factually incorrect and not tenable,” the parent company of MapMyIndia stated.

Ola Electric had inked an agreement with CE Info Systems in June 2021 for using its data. However, CE Info Systems in its legal notice said co-mingling and reverse engineering were prohibited in the agreement and under the Intellectual Property laws.

“By indulging in such unscrupulous and illegal activities, you have acted in blatant defiance of the terms and conditions of the agreement and have further infringed the copyright vested exclusively in our client pertaining to the source code,” the notice points out, according to Forbes India.

In early July, Ola rolled out the Ola Maps.

Responding to this, an Ola Electric spokesperson said, “Ola Electric wishes to address the recent claims made by CE Info Systems Limited in relation to the alleged issues with Ola Maps vis-à-vis MapMyIndia and reported in news media. We would like to state unequivocally that these allegations are false, malicious and misleading. Ola Electric stands by the integrity of its business practices. We will suitably respond to the notice shortly.”

Bhavish Aggarwal, founder and CEO of Ola, had said on X, “After Azure exit last month, we’ve now fully exited Google Maps. We used to spend Rs 100 crore a year, but we’ve made that 0 this month by moving completely to our in-house Ola Maps.”

Ola Electric is set to launch its initial public offering (IPO) on August 2, which will continue till August 6. The company has fixed the price band of its IPO in the range of Rs 72-76 a share.

The Bhavish Aggarwal-owned company’s public issue is a widely anticipated IPO among investors, and its market debut next month will be one of India’s biggest IPOs this year. It will also become India’s first-ever EV two-wheeler to list on the bourses.

As the IPO rules mandate the IPO to follow T+3 (closing date + 3 days) for listing, the Ola IPO listing will likely take place on August 9.
