Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 4G Gen 2 chipset during a significant event recently, aimed at making 5G technology more affordable and widely available across India. This initiative is poised to have a transformative impact by bringing down the price of 5G-enabled smartphones to Rs 8,000 or even lower. The Snapdragon 4S Gen 2 mobile platform, specifically designed for entry-level smartphones, is expected to cater to a massive user base of over 600 million people in India, who currently use smartphones. During the ‘Snapdragon for India’ event, Qualcomm executives emphasised the chipset’s role in democratising access to high-speed internet through 5G. They announced plans to drastically reduce the cost of gigabit 5G smartphones to below US$99 (approximately Rs 8,290), making advanced connectivity more accessible to a broader segment of the population. This move not only aims to accelerate the adoption of 5G technology, but also underscores Qualcomm’s commitment to fostering digital inclusion and innovation in the Indian market.

According to IDC data, the lowest-priced 5G smartphone in India is currently selling for Rs 9,999. The chipset will initially be adopted by Xiaomi and its other brands. The first commercial product is expected to be announced before the end of the year. Savi Soin, the President of Qualcomm India, underscored the significance of 5G technology in propelling India forward on its path of digital transformation and bolstering its global standing. He emphasised in an interview that widespread access to 5G will be instrumental in empowering India’s economy and society by enabling faster connectivity, innovative applications and enhanced digital services.

Soin expressed Qualcomm’s commitment to ensuring that every Indian can leverage the benefits of affordable 5G-enabled devices. This commitment extends beyond urban centres to encompass remote and rural areas, where connectivity has traditionally been limited. By focusing on delivering cost-effective 5G solutions, Qualcomm aims to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive growth across the country. At the heart of Qualcomm’s strategy is the goal to eliminate barriers to access, thereby democratising technology and empowering individuals and communities nationwide.
