The market closed lower amid selling in consumer durables, technology, metal, banking, FMCG, oil and select auto and pharma stocks.

New Delhi: The market closed lower amid selling in consumer durables, technology, metal, banking, FMCG, oil and select auto and pharma stocks. However, some capital goods stocks gained.

The market closed lower. The Sensex closed down 63 points or 0.67 per cent at 9311.19. It touched an intraday high of 9397.62 and an intraday low of 9287.09.

The Nifty closed down 17.45 points or 0.61 per cent at 2833.10. It touched an intraday high of 2855.65 and an intraday low of 2824.20.

The CNX Midcap Index closed down 23.65 points or 0.56 per cent at 4188.55. It touched an intraday high of 4232.45 and an intraday low of 4182.80.

The market breadth was negative, about 1006 shares advanced, 1456 shares declined, and 55 shares remained unchanged.

The total market turnover today was at Rs 29,201.03 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 3,163.01 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6,546 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 19,492.02 crore.

Analysts believe that it will be hard to predict the markets this week, and so one should remain on the sidelines and not be too aggressive.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 2.66 per cent at 3143.77 amid losses in Samtel Color, Titan, Blue Star and BPL.

Technology stocks like HCL Info, Hexaware Tech, TCS, Infosys, Satyam, Patni Computer and HCL Tech also witnessed selling pressure. The BSE IT Index closed down 1.68 per cent at 3591.86.

Metal stocks like Sail, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Jindal Stainless, Gujarat NRE Coke, Jindal Steel and Jindal Saw also ended in the red. The BSE Metal Index closed down 1.33 per cent at 6506.84.

The BSE Bankex closed down 1.05 per cent at 5126.27 due to selling in Union Bank, Allahabad Bank, Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Canara Bank, ICICI Bank and PNB.

Selling was also seen in oil stocks like Gail, Reliance, MRPL, Petronet LNG and HPCL. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 0.80 per cent.

FMCG stocks like Colgate, Shaw Wallace, Nirma, ITC, McDowell and Nestle also ended lower. The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.63 per cent at 1,644.16.

Select auto and pharma stocks also lost ground.

Buying however was seen in capital goods stocks. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 0.83 per cent at 5990.80 amid gains in Aban Loyd Chiles, Alstom Projects, Praj Industries, Thermax, ABB, Larsen, Dredging Corporation and BHEL.
