TRAI gets strict on telemarketers

New Delhi: You can finally say goodbye to unsolicited telemarketing calls. The telecom regulator TRAI has issued regulations to ensure that only those who wish to be called get the telemarketing calls.

The telecom regulatory authority of India has finally taken a stern step to stop the telemarketing calls. By placing a request with your telecom service provider, you can now say goodbye to those "Do you need a credit card calls." So how will the mechanism work?

Once you make a request to your operators, they will register your number in the ‘do not call’ list, which will be maintained by National Informatics Center or NIC.

The telemarketing agents will have to compulsorily register themselves with the DoT as "Other service providers". These OSP's would be able to disturb only those who want to be disturbed. But what if you still get those annoying calls?

"We will issue a warning for the first time. Second time there will be a tariff imposed on telemarketers to the range of Rs 500 to 1000 per call and the next violation will lead to discontinuation of service," said Nripendra Misra Chairman, TRAI.

But can the regulator revoke the license of these telemarketing companies? That issue has not been looked into atleast for now. It's the banking sector that could potentially be the worst hit on account of these regulations.

Almost 80 per cent of such calls originate from tele-banking companies. According to the regulator there are over 30,000 telemarketing companies, of which more than 3/4th are not registered with the DoT.

This regulation however will be passed only after TRAI gets approval from the DoT. But the regulator believes that shouldn't be a problem and hopes that customers will finally get to hang up on unsolicited telemarketing calls.

What's your reaction?
