Want a laptop for Rs 20,000?
ACI ETHOS E is just the PC for students and home users and is priced attractively for just this segment.

Mumbai: We presume that a laptop would be around atleast Rs 30,000 or so but the other day, I saw a Rs 20,000 laptop being advertised and so I bought it over and frankly was surprised.

The ACI ETHOS E has four USB ports, which is a bonus in terms of usability potential.

The casing is unusually sleek and so one can proudly place it next to your bosses Sony laptop. The package includes a carrying case, which isn’t great, but then it is free. The display is good and one can use a VCD while travelling but don’t even go near a 3D game on this one and it comes with a CD drive and not a CD writer. It doesn’t get too hot under the hood because of the via-processor.

The processing speed of the ACI ETHOS E is average at best. The keys are clunky and the touchpad is a bit like our government - unresponsive but reassuringly there! The sound is mediocre although a better soundcard option should have been there, but then the cost has to be taken into consideration.

We have advanced from the Stone Age to the information age but people can’t seem to figure out, that we want headphones and mike out in the front and not behind the machine. It is a tad heavy at 2.5 kgs and so lugging it along could be of help to anyone developing biceps.

The battery stands out for only one and half hours rather than two hours, which is advertised and that is not too appealing for a mobile user, but okay for a machine at this price level.

So despite some of its shortcomings, the ACI ETHOS E is one of the best laptop one can buy in this price-to-package ratio. For a student or a professional on the move, or home user, this is the laptop to buy though I would urge you to update it to 512 MB RAM, which costs only Rs 2,300 more.

What's your reaction?
