The festivities of Pongal in Thiruvarur are not just about traditional celebrations; they also include various sports competitions organized by the Aurora Sports Organization. The 39th annual sports event commenced with kabaddi matches, followed by a grand parade featuring various sports categories for children.
One of the prominent events during this celebration is the Rekla race, where horse carts participate in different categories, including small horses, medium horses, and large horses. The race traverses through four streets of the city, creating excitement among the residents of Thiruvarur district.
Kanum Pongal takes centre stage on the third day of the Thai month. Organized for over 30 years in the Thiruvarur district, the event encompasses various competitions. From running races for boys to cycle races for men and women, as well as swimming competitions and relay races, the festivities provide a diverse and exciting experience for both participants and spectators.

Furthermore, the rekla race, which had been banned three years ago due to legal issues, made a comeback this year after successful discussions. The event witnessed over a hundred bullocks and horse carts participating in six categories, adding a unique charm to the Pongal celebrations.
