Siddharth is one of the most well-known actors in Tamil cinema today. He is known for his happy-go-lucky boy next-door image in contrast to the larger-than-life heroic images of most Tamil stars. The actor also played one of the protagonists in the Bollywood film Rang De Basanti alongside Aamir Khan, making him popular outside the Tamil industry. It is common knowledge that Siddharth made his debut in the 2002 coming-of-age cult film Boys but only his die-hard fans know that it was not his first time facing the camera. He had already done it in the musical war film Kannathil Muthamittal.
Mani Ratnam wrote the screenplay and directed the 2002 release. Along with Baby Keerthana, the film starred Madhavan, Simran, Nandita Das, JD Chakravarthy, Prakash Raj, and Pasupathy. AR Rahman composed the music, Ravi K Chandran handled the cinematography, while Sreekar Prasad handled the editing.
The story of the movie, which was based on Sujatha’s critically acclaimed novel Amuthavum Naanum, was about a child born in Sri Lanka but was adopted by Indian parents. She then wants to visit her biological parents in the midst of the country’s civil conflict. The movie’s title, Kannathil Muthammittal, was inspired by a well-known passage from a poem by Subramanya Bharathi. Six national awards were won by the movie, reportedly the most for any Tamil film.
Nandita Das made her Tamil film debut with the movie. If you are wondering about where Siddharth was in the movie, it was a blink-and-miss role for him. He appears in a scene as a train passenger seen just behind Madhavan during an integral scene on a train. Siddharth assisted Mani Ratnam in the film and the director gave him a small uncredited role in it. It was during the making of Kannathil Muthamittal that the movie’s script writer Sujatha recommended his name to Shankar who was looking for fresh faces to cast in Boys.
