Situated in the arid terrains of Virudhunagar district within the Western Ghats, a noteworthy site has earned the title of the mini court of the region. Contrary to its dry district surroundings, this waterfall stands out as a unique feature, enhancing the charm of Virudhunagar.
During weekends, residents from nearby areas such as Sivakasi, Srivilliputhur, and Rajapalayam regularly visit Shenbagathoppu waterfall for bathing. A recent decrease in rainfall in the Virudhunagar district led to reduced water flow at Shenbagathoppu waterfall. As a result, there was a decline in the number of visitors to Shenbagathoppu Falls.
Following rainfall in the Srivilliputhur area on January 7 and 8, the water flow at Shenbagathoppu waterfall has seen a resurgence. Consequently, tourists have begun returning to Shenbagathoppu Waterfall.
Sharing his experience, Sivashankar from Sivakasi, who visited Shenbagathoppu waterfall, mentioned that the water condition has improved slightly. He usually visits with friends but chose to bring his family along this time. Several tourists at the waterfall expressed that it provides a great weekend getaway for those who cannot travel far.
Shenbagathoppu, located in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, India, stands as a popular travel destination and is often referred to as the mini Courtallam of Srivilliputhur.
Last year, Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu saw substantial rainfall coinciding with the beginning of the northeast monsoon. This continuous precipitation has resulted in a significant increase in water levels across various water bodies in the district.
The Shenbagathoppu Meenvetti Parai Falls is found within the Shenbagathoppu forest area on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. The term Thoppu in Tamil denotes groves, and Shenbagathoppu holds the distinction of being one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest groves. Situated around 8 kilometres from Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar District, this forest is home to tribal communities. Recognised for its trekking opportunities, it is acknowledged as one of the state’s finest reserve forest areas.
Some time back, the Kullursandai Dam experienced an overflow, surpassing its full capacity. This excess water proved crucial for irrigating the villages of Gullurchandhai, Kulakkarai, Mettukundu, Chennelkudi, Chettipatti, Maruluthu, and Kallumarpatti. As the dam reached its maximum level, the connected canal also overflowed, leading to the submersion of the footbridge on the Kullurchandhi-Matthanayakkanpatti road. Reports indicate that the water level rose to 2 feet above the bridge level.
