Another day, another bizarre dismissal for Sri Lanka veteran Angelo Mathews, who was dismissed hit-wicket after scoring a boundary off the same delivery in the one-off Test against Afghanistan.

Mathews cannot help but find himself amid yet another baffling dismissal, as he swept a wide delivery off Afghanistan’s Qais Ahmed down fine leg, but dragged his bat onto the stumps.

The veteran all-rounder looked in sensational form in his innings of 141 runs, but alas caught himself nine runs short of a fourth 150-plus score in his Test career.

Off the last ball of the second day, Mathews smashed a looser delivery from Qais to the fine leg boundary from deep in the crease. But in his follow through, he lost his balance and his bat clipped the stumps, meaning he was out hit wicket for the first time in his international career.

This meant that Sri Lanka would head into the third day, leading by 212 runs with four wickets in hand at stumps, with Sadeera Samarawickrama (21) still at the crease.

Mathews and teammate Dinesh Chandimal put on a record 232-run fourth-wicket partnership Saturday to leave Sri Lanka in firm control on day two of their one-off Test against Afghanistan in Colombo.

Chandimal (107) also notched up a century in a partnership that broke a record at the Sinhalese Sports Club that had stood for 32 years.

In 1992, Arjuna Ranatunga and Asanka Gurusinha put on 230 runs for the fourth wicket there in what is fondly remembered as the Shane Warne Test match, when the spin king helped Australia secure a thrilling 16-run win.

Mathews and Chandimal came together after three wickets had fallen in the morning session and Sri Lanka were still 50 runs behind.

Afghanistan was bowled out for 198 in its first innings on the opening day Friday, with Rahmat Shah top scoring with 91 runs. This is the first Test match between the two countries since Afghanistan was admitted as a Test-playing nation in 2018.
