The ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 begins with a doubleheader today, January 19. The inaugural matches of the global showpiece will see Ireland take on the USA and host South Africa go head-to-head against the West Indies. The summit clash will be held at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on February 11.
The biennial tournament was previously slated to be held in Sri Lanka. The Islanders, however, lost the hosting rights in November last year when the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended the Sri Lankan cricket board due to extensive government interference in its administration. Thus, the venue was later shifted to South Africa where the tournament is being hosted for the third time after 1998 and 2020. Sri Lanka, however, retained host qualification rights.
ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2024 Format:
The format of the tournament has been modified this time, based on last year’s Under-19 Women’s World Cup. All 16 participants have been divided into four groups featuring four teams each. Following a single round-robin contest, the top three teams from every group will progress to the Super Six stage.
The 12 qualified teams will be split into two groups again and the top two will punch their tickets to the semi-finals. The teams, which are knocked out from the group stage, will get to play some more matches to decide the last four positions.
ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup Defending Champions and Past Winners:
India will enter the 2024 U-19 World Cup with the tag of the reigning champions. They are also the most successful teams in the history of the competition, having clinched the title five times. Under the captaincy of Yash Dhull, India got the better of England in the last edition’s final. This year, the Boys in Blue will kick off their campaign with a match against fellow Asian side Bangladesh on January 20 at Bloemfontein.
Australia have become the champions of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup three times in 1988, 2002 and 2010, while Pakistan have lifted the trophy twice in 2004 and 2006. Meanwhile, Bangladesh, South Africa, West Indies and England have emerged victorious in one edition each.
