With the squad selection for the T20 World Cup 2024 impending, a plethora of cricketers are pushing their case in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 to earn a ticket to the West Indies and the US. The most-debated spot is the wicketkeepers’ with multiple individuals throwing their hats in the ring. The likes of Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Dinesh Karthik, and KL Rahul are already in the race. As the debate intensifies, several former cricketers feel that a surprise return of MS Dhoni won’t be a bad idea.
The former Indian skipper has been turning the clock now and then with his ferocious knocks. Though a knee issue has limited his heroics to a certain number of deliveries, he hasn’t failed to entertain the crowd with his majestic stroke play. Dhoni has scored 91 off 35 balls at a staggering strike-rate of 260 and no bowler has been able to get his wicket this season.
At the age of 42, Dhoni is striking the ball as cleanly as he used to be at his peak. He may have hung his boots back in 2020 but given his current form, former cricketers Varun Aaron and Irfan Pathan won’t mind seeing a bit of his magic to strengthen India’s chances to end the drought of ICC titles.
“We could see a wildcard entry in India’s T20 World Cup squad… MS Dhoni, Actually, it’s the wildest card.”

Pathan chipped in and echoed the sentiments of millions of Indian cricket fans.
“If he says he wants to play the T20 World Cup, no one will deny him that chance. It may not happen, but no one will mind, no one will have a problem with it. The guy is batting so well,” he added.
Dhoni has been in a great touch this season but he cannot be promoted in the batting order as his recovery from a knee injury has restricted his ability. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming said the few balls that Dhoni is getting to face this season, Dhoni is simply ‘owing that space’.
“I think everyone wants to see him for longer as we do but that amount of time is about right. We need him for the tournament and that 2-3 over cameo he is owning that space,” Fleming had said in a press conference.
“It’s up to the rest of the batting unit to get us to a good position where he can push us over the top. He is doing that pretty much every time at the moment which is great to watch,” he added.
