Rehan Ahmed managed to get the final wicket in the next over with a leg-spinner which had kept a bit low and deceived the set batter, Axar Patel to crash onto the stumps. Patel missed out on a well-deserved half-century in the innings.

Despite fielding specialist spinners like Jack Leach, Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed, it was the part-timer Joe Root who was the pick of the English bowlers. His impact was immediate as he managed to get rid of Jaiswal (80 off 74 deliveries) in the very first over as the youngster looked to maintain the aggressive intent he displayed at the end of Day 1.

KL Rahul came in at number four along with Shubman Gill in the middle and looked to take his time to get set. But did not shy away from his shots to get the boundaries. Gill however was not able to maintain calm as Tom Hartley managed to get the young batter. on 23 off 66 balls

Shreyas Iyer batting at the number five started off well but did not capitalise on the good start after the batter was dismissed on 35 off 63 deliveries. As KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja managed to get a 50-run stand, KL Rahul was dismissed after going after Rehan Ahmed to be caught at midwicket and miss out on a century.

KS Bharat who came in after a good show with the India A squad, continued his good form. He impressed with a decent cameo of 41 runs in 81 balls to give Jadeja company as the pair managed to raise a 68-run stand. Bharat was caught on the pads playing a sweep shot as Root managed to strike.

Ben Stokes’s men may have missed the trick in utilising the spinners as there was not much improvisation during the innings especially when the Indian batters were taking the lead.

England however remains in the game as they will be aiming to get the second innings going with a good start as openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley will look to play their shots and get the scoreboard ticking quickly.
