Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer was set back to the hut for a duck in his side’s IPL 2024 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Iyer offered up a catching opportunity to his counterpart Pat Cummins positioned at covers off T Natarajan’s delivery soon after he had come out to bat. The Australian made no mistake in hanging on to the catch and the Indian batter was sent back to the dugout for a duck off 2 deliveries.

It was a disappointing start to the season for the KKR skipper, who is making a return to the team following a layoff due to injury which kept him out of the side in the previous edition.

SRH skipper Cummins won the toss and opted to field first as KKR got off to a quick start as Phil Salt and Sunil Naraine put up 23 runs in the first two overs of the game, before the Windies all-rounder fell victim to a brilliant bit of fielding by Shahbaz Ahmed.

Venkatesh Iyer was dismissed shortly after as he was caught by South African Marco Jansen off Natarajan.

The left-arm pacer ensured to land a double blow on the opposition as he sent Iyer back to the hut in the very same over.

Nitish Rana, who captained the side last year in Iyer’s absence, could not affect the match much with the willow as he was scalped for 9 runs by Mayank Markande.

Salt and Ramandeep Singh put up a 54-run stand in quick fashion to lift up KKR’s run tally before the young Indian was dismissed by Cummins for a well-made 35 off just 17 deliveries.

Opener Salt went on to notch up a half-century to further increase the hosts’ total and was supported ably by the talented youngster Rinku Singh.
