Ishan Kishan Breaks Silence on His 'Mental Fatigue' Break: 'No One Understood My Situation...'

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has finally broken his silence over his sabbatical from international cricket which became a big point of discussion in the Indian cricket fraternity. Following India’s heartbreak in the ODI World Cup 2023 final, Kishan sought a break from India’s tour of South Africa in December last year citing mental fatigue. He also missed the entire Ranji Trophy season but meanwhile, was training with Hardik Pandya in Baroda before turning up for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024. He eventually lost the BCCI annual contract and was even left out of the Zimbabwe tour.

Speaking to Indian Express, Kishan opened up about his decision to step away from the game for a while, asserting that no one understood what he went through but his family.

“I was scoring runs and then I found myself on the bench. These things do happen in a team sport. However, I experienced travel fatigue. It meant there was something wrong, I was not feeling well or right and so I decided to take a break. However, sadly, barring my family and few close people no one understood that,” Ishan was quoted as saying by the daily.

“[The past few months] were depressing. Today I don’t want to say that everything was fine. It was not easy for me at all. You go through a lot. Mere dimag mey ye sab chalta raha ki yaar kya hoga gaya, kyu ho gaya, mere saath kyu (Questions like what happened, why me). All these things happened when I was performing,” he added.

Kishan further said he doesn’t want to be sad because of losing the central contract. Instead, he wishes to live in present and get better at his game.

“I don’t want to be sad about anything. I’ll keep giving my best.” Kishan said.

“I am not thinking too much about the future. I want to stay in the present. At this point, I am only focused on how to become a better and different player from what I was six months ago. I will work on a few innovative shots and my wicket-keeping,” he added.
