Mayank Yadav Provides Big Update About His Fitness Ahead Of Indian Team Selection For Sri Lanka Tour
Mayank made headlines for his express pace in the 2024 edition of the IPL for the Lucknow Super Giants, and in four matches, he picked up seven wickets.

The Indian men’s cricket team will travel to Sri Lanka at the end of July and face the Islanders in three T20Is and as many ODIs. The limited-overs series between the two finalists of the Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to start on July 27. The BCCI selectors are set to announce India’s squad for the bilateral series next week. It has been reported that Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah will be rested for the away series ahead of the upcoming busy Test season.

Ahead of India’s team selection, IPL 2024 star Mayank Yadav has provided a big update about his fitness. The 22-year-old Delhi-born pacer made headlines for his pace in the cash-rich league this year for the Lucknow Super Giants but struggled with fitness. Due to injury, he was only able to play in four matches and pick up seven wickets.

The youngster is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and has said that he has resumed bowling with a full run-up and intensity.

“My recovery programme went very well, and I feel much better now. I feel much fitter as well,” Mayank was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

Despite doing well in his recovery programme, Mayank is set to remain at the NCA for some more time, which has raised doubts over his selection for the Sri Lanka series.

“Yes, I’ll have to spend some more time here, but the good thing is, I’ve been bowling with the full run-up and a lot of intensity over the past few days. I’m happy with my progress so far,” he added.

Performance in IPL 2024

Mayank made his IPL debut for LSG against the Punjab Kings in Lucknow on March 30 and picked up three wickets for 27 runs. In the second match against RCB, he again dismissed three batters for 14 runs. He suffered an injury scare during the third match against the Gujarat Titans and was only able to bowl one over. He missed the next few matches of IPL 2024 before finally making a comeback against the Mumbai Indians on April 30, but in that match, he felt some pain and didn’t complete his quota of overs.

Likely to play in Duleep Trophy

According to a BCCI source quoted by The Telegraph, BCCI is in the mood to give Mayank enough time to get fully fit. He is likely to make a comeback during the Duleep Trophy, which is set to start on September 5 in Anantapur.

“A young fast bowler like Mayank needs to be given the necessary amount of time to first cope with the needs of the different formats. So, he’s still being closely monitored. If he’s rushed into the Indian team, it’s a risk, as that could lead to a breakdown. So, if needed, getting him ready for India could also begin next year. However, if he plays in the Duleep Trophy and does well, he may also be considered for the coming home series (against Bangladesh and New Zealand),” a BCCI official said.
