It remains unclear as to why Virat Kohli opted out of the first two Tests with the statement from the BCCI not mentioning the reasons for his absence. He had previously missed the ODI and T20I series during their tour of South Africa after which he rejoined the squad for the two-match Test series.
The absence of Virat Kohli was felt in the Indian squad as they suffered a loss in the first Test against England which took place in Hyderabad. Despite being on top after the first innings, a brilliant knock by the English vice-captain Ollie Pope who scored 196, left the side led by Rohit Sharma stumped.

However, the loss of momentum carried over onto the final innings where India were asked to chase down 230 runs with well over a day’s play remaining. But the English spinners managed to take the game to the Indian batting attack as Tom Hartley managed to produce a fantastic performance on debut to finish the second innings with figures of 7/62 to help England get the victory.
The Indian camp will be eager to get Virat Kohli back in the camp as they missed his batting abilities in the middle. His experience in the format and ability to take the game away from the toughest of oppositions will come in handy later on in the series.

The Indian team are gearing up for their second Test against England which takes place in Vishakapatnam and will hope that the hosts can get back against England with a win to remain in the hunt to secure the series victory and extend their undefeated series record which dates back to 2012.
