Former India captain MS Dhoni has referred to the challenges of featuring in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the age of 42. It has been nearly four years since Dhoni drew curtains on his decorated international career. He, however, continues to compete in the IPL, representing Chennai Super Kings. As part of the franchise, Dhoni has achieved tremendous success. He has led CSK to five IPL titles. After the Yellow Army became the champions last season, many felt Dhoni would bid adieu to the franchise competition. But the legendary cricketer decided to play at least for one more season.
Ahead of the 2024 IPL, MS Dhoni stepped down as the captain of Chennai Super Kings, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over the charge. Despite leaving the leadership responsibility, Dhoni made sure to play all league matches. In the last outing in Bengaluru, CSK suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who edged past the reigning champions as per the net run rate to clinch a playoff spot.
After CSK crashed out of the tournament, the question was once again raised – “Will MS Dhoni appear in the 2025 IPL?” Amid speculations about his future in the T20 tournament, a video featuring the World Cup-winning skipper was dropped on the Dubai Eye 103.8 YouTube channel.
When the league stage of IPL 2024 was underway, MS Dhoni, along with CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and coach Stephen Fleming appeared at a public event. On that occasion, Dhoni shared how he had kept himself fit for the cash-rich tournament despite not playing cricket for the majority time of the year.
“Once I come, you are competing against youngsters who are fit and playing international cricket. Professional sport is not easy, nobody gives you a discount for age. If you want to play, you have to be as fit as the other guy. Age does not really give that grace to you. So, eating habits, a bit of training and all those things are there. Social media, thankfully, I am not on social media, so there’s less distraction,” the 42-year-old said.
According to CSK sources, MS Dhoni will jet off to London in the coming few days for the treatment of a muscle tear injury. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter had reportedly been carrying the injury throughout the IPL season. It had restricted his movement as Dhoni had to come down in the batting order to manage his workload. The sources further revealed that Dhoni would make the decision about his IPL career after recovering from the muscle injury.
