'Shreyas Iyer Deserves Credit': Ian Bishop Gives KKR Skipper His Flowers During KKR's Emphatic IPL 2024 Title Win

The captain goes down with the ship, but he also needs to shine bright when he triumphs. And that is exactly what Ian Bishop recognised as the legendary commentator Ian Bishop gave KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer his flowers upon their dominant 8-wicket win and their third IPL title triumph on Sunday.

Iyer may not have had the best of seasons with the bat, as the skipper managed to notch a mere 351 runs in 14 matches in the group stage.

But, Iyer’s contribution as captain cannot go understated, as the Indian batter led KKR to 9 wins in 14 matches in the group stage, before displaying excellence with his decision-making and bowler rotations, especially in the playoffs this season.

During KKR’s chase, Ian Bishop made mention of the understated captaincy of Iyer and shed light on the skipper being a pivotal reason behind the Kolkata side’s unprecedented success this season.

“I want to input my own sort of balance to this team (KKR) and that guy, Shreyas Iyer. I’ve been hearing a lot about Gautam Gambhir, who has created a magnificent culture in this KKR team. But, this guy Shreyas, I don’t think he’s getting enough credit. I’ve been saying it all season, and they came after me in social media,” stated Ian Bishop on commentary during the IPL 2024 Final.

“And not to forget, the bowling of KKR, I think that is understated. So, I just wanted to get that out there. So, these two (Gambhir and coaches) and Shreyas Iyer need some credit,” added Bishop.

Similar to Iyer, another man that deserves credit for the fine job he has done to incorporate and develop the young Indian core of KKR this season, is none other than assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.

“Really happy, credit goes to Abhishek Nayar, all the credit in the world, the way he’s worked for the franchise. Some contributions go unnoticed, I want to make sure they don’t. He was the one who built this Indian core. We waited for 10 years, credit to the management and the coaching staff.” stated KKR batter Venkatesh Iyer.

Even KKR’s ace-bowler this season, Varun Chakravarthy added on to Venkatesh’s comments and shared his gratitude for the assistant coach and his influence in the team this season.

“This has been a great season for me. All I can think of now is the person who has built the Indian core – Abhishek Nayar.

The work and the outcome will speak for Iyer and the team themselves though, as KKR blew away SRH bowlers, gunning down the abysmal target of 114 set by SRH with eight wickets in hand and 9.3 overs remaining.
