It was a T20 World Cup debut to remember for the South African pacer, Ottneil Baartman who managed to deliver with a wicket off his first ever delivery in the tournament to kick off his campaign in style.

The pacer managed to strike and get the wicket of the dangerous Sri Lankan opening batter, Pathum Nissanka to start the over. The batter looked to throw his bat behind the fuller delivery but the extra bounce took him by surprise and got the edge which carried towards the third-man fielder who made no mistake when taking the catch.
The Proteas have managed to kick off the tournament on a flying note thanks to their bowling attack which has run riot against the Sri Lankan batting unit. South Africa cleared out half of the Sri Lankan side for just 40 runs in the first half of the innings.

South Africa did take a massive gamble regarding Baartman’s selection who has only played 1 T20I before the World Cup. But his experience having performed in the SA20 has served him well where he finished the tournament with 18 wickets, making him the second-highest wicket-taker of the season behind Marco Jansen.
The side led by Aiden Markram will look to start off the tournament on a positive note as they aim to end their long-standing title drought having never won an official ICC tournament in the nation’s history.

The Proteas have a fairly strong unit in all aspects but in the game against Sri Lanka, they have only opted to go for four pacers along with the one specialist spinner in their bowling attack.
Despite losing the toss, Aiden Markram will be mightily pleased by the start that his side has given themselves and will hope they can continue the dominance through the rest of the game.
South Africa has the likes of Sri Lanka along with Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal as part of Group D in the T20 World Cup 2024.
