Sunil Gavaskar 'Mildly Reprimanded' Yashasvi Jaiswal Before England Test Series
Yashasvi Jaiswal was in red-hot form during the recent India-England Test series as he racked up over 700 runs across five matches.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has made quite a start to his Test career having made his debut last year during India’s tour of the Caribbean. Jaiswal made a memorable maiden outing in whites as he scored a century and followed that with a half-century in the next game.

After a challenging South Africa tour, Jaiswal roared back with record-breaking performance against England at home, amassing 712 runs in 9 innings at an average of 89 to win the player-of-the-series award.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has revealed that he had a chat with Jaiswal during the South Africa tour and reprimanded the youngster for throwing away his wicket during the second Test against West Indies last year in Port of Spain.

Jaiswal had made 57 during India’s first innings before being dismissed.

“It felt very nice to see Yashasvi getting all those runs and the manner in which he dominated the (England) attack,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by The Hindustan.

“I had mildly reprimanded him in the hotel elevator on Day 1 of the first Test in South Africa for throwing away his wicket in Trinidad (previous Test) after a good 50 plus score and told him never to do the bowlers any favour. Thankfully, he listened to me and got two big doubles in this series,” he added.

Jaiswal scored two double-centuries during the five matches England as India completed a 4-1 series win. He thus became the third Indian after Vinoo Mankad and Virat Kohli to score more than one double-ton in the same series.

Besides those mammoth scores, the 22-year-old also peeled off three half-centuries and Gavaskar hopes the young opener will achieve more in his future.

“He got three other half centuries and forgot what I had told him there. But hey, who listens to anyone when one is in his 20s! I didn’t either,” Gavaskar quipped.

“Hopefully, he will go on to bigger things and never forgets that he is what he is because of Indian cricket,” he added.
