Things are starting to gather steam in the second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) as we have entered the second half of the tournament. In match no. 14 of WPL 2024, playoffs hopeful UP Warriorz will take on defending champions Mumbai Indians. The match will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
In the reverse fixture earlier this season, UPW-W comfortably swept aside the reigning champions by seven wickets. After batting first, MI-W posted 161/6 in 20 overs, riding on West Indies opener Hayley Matthews’ 55 and some late fireworks from Issy Wong. Chasing 162, UPW-W hardly broke a sweat, racing to the finish line with seven wickets in hand and 21 balls to spare.
Kiran Navgire scored a ballistic 31-ball 57 before Grace Harris (38* off 17) and Deepti Sharma (27* off 20) applied the finishing touch with aplomb.
However, both teams head into this game on the back of a defeat. UPW-W slipped to a 23-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore while Delhi Capitals avenged their defeat earlier this season by beating MI by 29 runs. The losses leave MI-W and UPW-W in third and fourth spots, respectively.
UPW could leapfrog MI to move into third place with a win, while the 2023 champions could temporarily move to second position if they run out as winners.
