IAS probationer Pooja Khedkar is currently making headlines. She is accused of making unreasonable demands for government accommodation, a car, and staff while on probation. Many people are justifying her demand, but do you know that UPSC has made some rules for trainee officers and Pooja Khedkar’s demand is against those rules?
To join the civil services, it is necessary to pass the country’s toughest exam, the UPSC Civil Services Exam. After two years of training, officers get their field posting (IAS Training). In these two years, they are taught discipline, ways to fight difficult situations, administration, etc. In the last phase of training, all the trainee officers are analysed. During this time, the Union Public Service Commission is responsible for their accommodation and food.
Trainee IAS Salary
During civil service training, all officers (IAS, IPS, IRS, and IFS) get the same salary. The salary keeps increasing and decreasing in different phases of training. One can assume that the salary of a trainee IAS is up to Rs 50–60 thousand per month. Sometimes they even get up to Rs 70,000.
Trainee IAS Benefits
No IAS officer is provided with facilities like government accommodation, a car, a driver, staff, etc. during training. They get accommodation and food facilities from the Union Public Service Commission. During field posting, they get TA (Travel Allowance) and DA (Dearness Allowance) of Rs 3,000 per day. If they get field posting during training, they can stay in a government guest house or can also take a room in a hotel.
What benefits do IAS get during training?
During IAS training, they get to learn a lot. Field exposure and travelling help them understand the true meaning of civil service. Along with this, they also get the opportunity to participate in many types of extra-curricular modules. This includes activities like leadership, the art of living and trekking. Apart from this, IAS trainees also get a special opportunity to be on call with dignitaries like the Defense Minister, President, and Vice President.
