Did you know India’s first English medium school opened in Chennai? You heard it right, the school is a centuries-old institution, which was started during the era of British Rule. The institution is regarded as a prestigious place, where parents hope to send their kids from an early age.
The school is located in the Shenoy Nagar area of Chennai city, Tamil Nadu. It is named St George’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, which started as the Military Male Orphan Asylum, in 1715. According to reports, it is the oldest school in India and one of the oldest in the world. It is the first English medium school in the country.
The school was opened by the East India Company for the wards of its employees. As per the reports, in its early days, only the kids of the British were allowed to be admitted to the school. Furthermore, the children of employees who settled in the country and married Indian women were allowed to take admission.
The red-brick building of the school was constructed in an area of 21 acres. It includes a boarding house, dormitory, playgrounds and kitchen. The institution provides quality education to over 1,500 pupils admitted in the classes from nursery to intermediate. The school also consists of a library and a computer centre, along with 38 members of the staff, the Headmaster and the correspondent. The library houses some rare books belonging to the 18th century. They have a hockey team, which is considered one of the best in the city. As per reports, the fee here are fairly lower, compared to other institutions.
The chapel and the classroom block of St George’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School are included in the list of CMDA’s (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) 400 heritage structures in the city of Chennai. At the moment, the 309-year-old institution’s headmaster is Mr N George, while the director is Dr GK Francis.
