'Want Students to Wear Formal Clothes': Mumbai College Bans Jeans, T-shirts A Year After Banning Hijab
According to the new dress code and other rules issued by the Acharya and Marathe College, torn jeans, T-shirts, revealing dresses, and jerseys are not allowed inside the college premises

After banning students from wearing hijab, Acharya and Marathe College in Chembur issued a new dress code on Monday banning students from wearing jeans and T-shirts. This comes days after the Bombay High Court dismissed a plea filed by nine students of the college, challenging the college’s dress code banning hijab which was issued last year, reported Indian Express.

According to the new dress code and other rules issued by the college, torn jeans, T-shirts, revealing dresses, and jerseys are not allowed inside the college premises and the notice has been issued following several cases of indecent behaviour being reported on the campus by students, the principal told the news agency.

As per the report, the notice, signed by the principal of Acharya and Marathe College, Dr. Vidyagauri Lele, reads, “Students should wear formal and decent dress while on campus. They can wear a half-shirt or full-shirt and trousers. Girls can wear any Indian or western outfit. Students shall not wear any dress which shows religion or cultural disparity. Nakab, hijab, burkha, stole, cap, badge, etc shall be removed by going to common rooms on the ground floor, and then only they can move throughout the college campus.”

The principal further added that the administration just wants the students to wear formal clothes as that is how they should be dressing once they get employed. “…have asked them to wear formal Indian or western clothes. After all, they will be expected to wear those once they are employed,” the principal told the news daily.

Dr. Lele also added that the students were informed about the dress code at the time of admission. Students attend college for around 120-130 days out of 365 days a year so, “what problem should they have to adhere to a dress code for these days?” she told the news agency.
