Robin van Persie's fifth premier league hat-trick helped Manchester United beat Aston Willa 3-0 as the Red Devils ensured that they will clinch the league title a record 20th time at the end of the season. With 24 goals to his name, the Netherlands striker has been in prolific goal scoring spree and on a monumental day, it was his second goal at Old Trafford that had people talking.
Van Persie's second strike, a 13th-minute volley, courtesy a Wayne Rooney floater from 50 yard prompted Alex Ferguson to hail is as the 'goal of the century'.
After the match Ferguson said, "It was goal of the century for me. It was marvellous - the technique with his head down, over the ball and just perfect timing. It was a magnificent strike. He scored exactly the same goal against Arsenal. He is in his mature years and winning the league tonight meant a lot to him.
Ferguson, who notched up his 49th club trophy also added, "Robin's been unbelievable, he had that dry spell where he hadn't scored for a few weeks but the penalty kick at Stoke brought it back. He was unbelievable tonight, unbelievable. Fantastic".
Speaking to www.manutd.com , the Scot said, "He (Robin) has to take a lot of the credit - his goals tell you that and his performance levels tell you that. I'm sure Robin would be saying what a great bunch of players I've got with me - they're a great bunch of players."
