Madrid: Barcelona's 2-0 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu came thanks to goals from Lionel Messi and Pedro, with the former speaking to La Sexta immediately after the match.
The World Player of the Year said, "Will this win us the league? There are still games left to go. We have some tough away matches, but yes, we took a big and important step tonight.
"It was a close game because both teams respect each other a lot - we both know each other well so there's a lot of respect. But when we had chances we took them, and that's why we won."
The current Liga top scorer then moved to play down any notion of a personal battle between himself and Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
"It wasn't about that - Barca were superior to Real Madrid, and that's all that matters," he reasoned.
"We gained three very important points here. We are leading the league, alone, and now we have a real advantage for the rest of the tournament.
"As for the Champions League? Let's go one step at a time. We can make more history - a lot more - if it comes our way, but we need to keep on working hard.
