Brentford’s Neal Maupay, Tottenham’s James Maddison Clash Heads Over Dart-Throw Celebration - WATCH
Maupay pulled out Maddison's iconic dart-throw celebration after giving Brentford an early lead in the away clash. The gesture did not go down well with the English midfielder, who came up with the reply once the final whistle was blown.

Neal Maupay and James Maddison engaged in a war of words off the pitch following a grueling London derby between Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

The match saw a stunning turnaround of fortunes. Maupay broke the deadlock for Brentford early in the first half. The Spurs, however, came roaring back in the second half of the home fixture. They scored three back-to-back goals and changed the course of the game in a matter of just minutes. Ivan Toney struck for Brentford in the 67th minute but could not stop the hosts from securing a full three points.

After Tottenham Hotspur notched a 3-2 win in the Premier League game, Maddison went on to troll Maupay through a social media post. The French striker pulled out Maddison’s iconic dart-throw celebration after giving Brentford an early lead in the away clash. The gesture did not go down well with the English midfielder, who came up with the reply once the final whistle was blown.

Maddison dropped a picture of the full-time score along with some glimpses of the nervy encounter on Instagram with a caption reading, “A short story…COYS.” The post caught the attention of Maupay, who saracastically commented, “Ahahah rent-free.”

The Brentford man also shared a separate post on Instagram, with a subtle reference to Maddison’s take. Maupay posted a picture of him performing the dart-throw celebration at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Instagram. He wrote in the caption, “Went a bit early with that one. Gutted we couldn’t get the win. More goals and fewer relegations in my career than James Maddison. We go again Monday bees.”

Maupay’s post attracted numerous reactions from football fans. Some of them feel the striker should not celebrate for “having more goals than a midfielder” like Maddison. “Posting after a loss bit embarrassing mate,” commented a fan.

After the match was over, Maddison told TNT Sports, “I just said to him (Maupay), he hasn’t scored enough goals of his own in the last few years to have his own celebration, so he had to copy mine. Short story, ended well for us.”

Thanks to the victory over Brentford, Tottenham Hotspur hold their position among the top four in the Premier League standings with 43 points in 22 games. They will be up against Everton for the next league assignment on February 3 away from home.
