New Delhi: David Beckham could become a knight in Tony Blair's resignation honours list and, true to the role, the returning England hero is intent on rescuing someone in distress. All eyes will be on Beckham this evening to see if he can breathe fresh life into the his team's fortunes against the best team in the world - Brazil.
The massive frenzy around the Beckham has diverted attention from the state of the Wembley pitch. Brazil coach Dunga believes the turf isn't fit to grace one of the finest arenas and comes loose too easily.
And to be fair to the critics, put stars like Kaka on a surface such as this, and they don't play like geniuses.
"We expected a better pitch and it is going to be a little bit difficult. Considering that it is a new stadium we expected better," said Dunga, the Brazil coach.
But when have we ever seen a Brazil team buckle down in the face of intimidation. Dunga will field what many consider his strongest available line-up, with Ronaldinho, right, and Kaka in advanced midfield positions, breaking to support the strikers Vagner Love and Robinho.
"It isn't about out team being invincible, we'll just go out and do our job," said Robinho, the Brazil striker.
"C'mon, I'm sure we have it in us to win it. We know we can do it," added Ronaldinho.
Meanwhile, even as John Terry and Michael Owen are all fired up to establish a good start at the new national stadium, one man's return has simply overshadowed both the stadium and the match. And even the Samba boys know they could be thrown out of gear by this show-stopper.
"He is a great player and he is doing very well in Madrid so it is only normal that the coach should bring good players back in," said Dunga.
It takes a split second for admiration to turn to awe. Will it be a Hollywood-style comeback for the man whose home will soon be in Tinseltown?
