Soon after the racist incident, footballers from across the world showed support for Alves by posting images on social media.
Barcelona have defended Dani Alves for his response to a racist taunt when a banana was thrown at him in Sunday's 3-2 win at Villarreal, and he responded by picking it up and eating. Soon after the incident, Alves' Barca team-mate Neymar posted a photo of himself with a peeled banana on the Internet in support, followed by stars from other leagues across the world joining in support by posting images on social networks.
