Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur seem to be set for a competition to complete the signing of Romanian defender Radu Dragusin. Spurs appeared to have already completed Dragusin’s signing from Serie A side Genoa but Manchester United are now reportedly ‘willing to pay’ the Italian club’s asking price for the Romanian centre-back.
A report published by TuttoJuve claims that Manchester United would be willing to pay €40 million (£35 million) for the 21-year-old. Dragusin has been a regular starter for Genoa so far in the Italian domestic league this season. Born in Romania, Dragusin started in all of his 18 appearances in this season’s Serie A. Moreover, Dragusin has scored two goals in the Serie A so far.
Fabrizio Romano, a transfer market specialist, stated a few days back that Tottenham are prepared to send their first verbal bid for Radu Dragusin. Romano even went on to claim that Dragusin has “already said yes.”
“Tottenham are prepared to send the first verbal bid for Radu Dragusin after talks opened with Genoa, as revealed last night. Dragusin already said yes. Todibo deal could collapse soon — as timing with OGC Nice will be slow and Tottenham want new CB to join next week,” read the post shared by Fabrizio Romano on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
Due to injuries and suspensions of defensive duo of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has had to deploy full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson Royal as centre-backs many times this season. In a situation like this, finding a prominent centre-back seems to be a top priority for the Lilywhites.
A report published by The Athletic had previously claimed that the centre-back has been a priority position for Tottenham in this transfer window. The article went on to claim that Radu Dragusin was in consideration along with players like Lloyd Kelly, Tosin Adarabioyo and Jean-Clair Todibo.
Dragusin rose through the ranks at Juventus and made his debut under Andrea Pirlo in 2020. Later, he had some spells with Sampdoria and Salernitana in Serie A during the 2021-22 season. He was loaned out to Genoa the next season. Dragusin featured in all matches for Genoa in the Serie B 2022-23 season. In international football, Dragusin has represented Romania 13 times.
